“In my whole life, I don’t remember a single moment where I am not drawing…”

In 1962, Tatsuo Yoshida, a leading Japanese cartoonist, established the cartoon studio Tatsunoko (formerly known as Tatsunoko Production) together with his two younger brothers, Kenji Yoshida and Toyoharu Yoshida. Tatsuo Yoshida was the first president of the studio, followed by Kenji Yoshida, and then by Toyoharu Yoshida. Tatsuo Yoshida is also known by fans as Tatsu, which means the son of Tatsuo. In Japanese, Tatsu also means the seahorse, hence the trademark of the studio.

Over the several decades since its established, Tatsunoko has produced over 60 animations, including Tekkaman Blade, TenKuu Senki Shurato, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, among others. The studio is known as the cradle of talents, who has fostered many other animation talents and studios. Talents that used to work with Tatsunoko include Kunio Okawara, Akemi Takada, Mamoru Oshii, Yoshitaka Amano, Mashimo Kouichi, and Toshihiko Nishikubo, who are all well-known cartoonists worldwide today.

Yoshitaka Amano joined Tatsunoko at the age of 15 and left at the age of 30. During the 15 years from adolescence to young adulthood, Amano worked hard to develop his talent, building up a solid artistic foundation for his creative work in the future.

When joining Tatsunoko, Amano was the youngest employee. He worked as assistant animator. After two years of training, his talent was well recognized by Tatsuo Yoshida and Amano was then promoted to take part in the new anime productions. He also got his own office right next to the president, started character design for the studio.

Amano always had endless creative ideas. When receiving character specifics of age, gender, and temperament, he can immediately start design. Using his pen name, he created numerous heroes and villains every week for popular animations such as Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Time Bokan, Casshan, etc. Apart from character design, he also worked on color design and visual dimensions.

“Tatsunoko is like a dream box for me, where I got to unleash my creative potentials fully. What I learned from Tatsuo Yoshida has had a huge impact on my career and artistic work. What you see as my personal creative style, to a large extent, is a result of my working days with Tatsunoko.”
