Welcome to Real Story. What will you do if you meet someone who tries to rob you for money? Give him the money and run away, and call the police? That’s what many people will do, in today’s story, an American social worker called Julio did something unusual when he met a robber.

When I first read Julio’s story, I thought of my own experience many years ago when I was a high school student. One weekend many Autumns ago, My friend and I were sitting in a local stadium, watching a few people playing basketball until it’s getting dark and one teenager came to me, in a very low voice: “Give me your money or I might hurt you!” My friend was shocked and too scared to move. I was scared too, and after a few seconds, I told him: “Look, we are kids and we have no money with us, but I can call my brother to give you some, let me call him.” He ran away when I tried to shout. I can still remember this experience today, I think at that moment I meant it when I said I would call my brother to help this teenager.

Anyway when Julio was on his way home after a long day’s work, tired, a teenager showed up in his way and asked him for money, pointing a knife at him. He gave him his wallet and when the robber was ready to run, he asked him to take his jacket too. The teenager was very surprised and asked him why. Julio said: “If you decide to rob others at night, you might need a jacket to keep yourself warm.” As the teenager was still in shock, he invited him to follow him to a restaurant to eat with him, as they both were hungry. Another surprise happened, when he actually followed Julio and ate with him. After some talk, the teenager gave Julio his knife and Julio gave him 20 dollars in return.

It’s Julio telling his story. His mum said he is that kind of guy that when others ask him about time, he will give them his watch. But he said that you treat people right, you can only hope that they will treat you right. It’s as simple as it gets in this complicated world.
